Are you looking for a new background idea? Add some fabulous color to your next card by creating the Northern Lights from ink. It’s the perfect look behind a dark object that’s intended to be silhouetted.
Begin by cutting a 4” x 6” piece of white cardstock. Also, cut a 5” x 7” card base using the color of cardstock of your choice. You will, also, need a piece of 4 ¾” x 6 ¾” patterned paper (Autumn Gold Foil by Echo Park was used for this card).
Cut a 4” wide piece of cardstock and then roughly tear the top of it as shown. This will be used to create the horizon line on the card.
Lay the piece of torn paper over the top of the 4” x 6” piece making sure to line them up at the sides and bottom. Use a black ink pad (Black Soot by Ranger used) and blending tool to ink the top edge. Then, remove the torn piece of cardstock and finish inking the bottom of the card.
Now add 3 areas of yellow ink (Neon Yellow by Hero Arts used) using the blending tool and a new blending pad.
Add some green ink (Neon Green by Hero Arts shown) around the edges of the yellow.
Now cover most of the white areas with a light to medium blue ink (Neon Blue).
Finish the rest of the white areas off using the purple ink (Neon Purple).
Go around the edges and slightly inward in a dark blue ink (Faded Jeans by Ranger used) and then ink the edges using the black ink. Also, lightly sponge some black ink over the top of the entire piece to darken it. Remember it is a night time sky so you don’t want the bold colors shining through all of the way.
Use a white gel pen or paint to add the lights to the sky. Allow the paint to dry if using it.
Die cut a tree from black cardstock using a die cut machine and the Designer Trees die by Little B. Attach it to the sky piece using a glue pen.
Finish the inside of the card by adding the sentiment.
The next time you want a great sky look to add to your favorite stamps or dies, think north…the Northern Lights that is and have some fun creating the glowing sky of the night. This design is perfect for any type of card, any theme and any time of the year. If you want to use a silhouette look this is the perfect background so don’t hesitate, dig out those inks and start creating!
